Although I am going through this terrible divorce that tore apart my family, I am finally finding peace again. I had to redefine what a family is to me and learn that my "family" will NEVER leave me and that I can find so much peace in that. My journey has been so hard but I can't tell you how grateful I am for every step. Good and bad. I have been quiet in the last year. I find it better not to vent my angry and ugly emotions on a public blog...and there have been lots of ups and downs. In this new year....the word "tribe" was whispered in my ear one morning. I KNOW that this word will have a lot of meaning for me in the new year...it already has. I just want you all to know how much I treasured the thoughts of kindness that were sent to me and the words of encouragement given to me in the last two years...the days when I felt paralyzed and the tears didn't stop flowing. The kindness given to me when I couldn't give anything in return....I am so grateful and thankful. xoxo

OK, Here it is, November already!! I am FINALLY getting back to creating again. Here are a bunch of pictures of some new things and a show that one of my

'bestest" and extremely talented friends in the whole world did together. It was so much fun!!! Lani does the most wonderful hex signs made from old barn wood that she found on her own property, woolen goods such as pillows and felted purses and beautiful scarves. She is an amazing quilter and seamstress. Her house is inspiring and amazing. We are both going through similar situations in are lives and are learning to spread our wings together.:) Also, I am looking to do some more shows if anyone kindly thinks that some of my wares would fit into any shows you know of, please I would LOVE to know and meet some kindred spirits. I have two sick kids home today on the couch. We have been going through lots of tissues the past few days. :) But, we have already had our first big snow and I am inspired to make some Christmas ornaments!!! Hopefully, I will be a more faithful blogger soon!!!! xo

I am in a flurry to FINALLY take the step to put a few things up on etsy. I promised to have Forgettn Friends Friday and I still will. This will take some pressure off of me so even if I only list one item on Fridays my shop will be stocked a bit. Working on some personal art and it feels great!!! After listing the teddy bear and puppy painting I realized I wasn't happy with it. I painted in the background a bit and added a border. I felt like the toys seemed to blend into the background too much. Also, my camera is a struggle and I am taking my pictures outdoors and they seem to be sharper. So, taking a deep breath and stepping ahead. :)

This was the question posed for week one of the Chopra Center's 21 days of meditation. To kick off the event, I did a little personal retreat reflecting on the question. This is a finger labyrinth. You pose a question at the beginning of the labyrinth and follow your finger along the winding path. Through prayer and meditation and in your own stillness, it helps to center you in prayer. I have found great comfort in walking a full size labyrinth as well as using a finger labyrinth. I will use this labyrinth for the question, "who am I?," only. I have made others for general use as well. Here is what I ended up with. If you would like to "try out" this labyrinth, click on the very last picture to enlarge and use your mouse to follow the path. Find some quiet time so you can concentrate and open up to the possibilities. I would love to hear your experience if you give it a try. :)

I guess I am no longer afraid to admit that my heart is broken, tattered, torn and ripped apart but I am also completely open now and ready to heal. The first one represents where I feel like I am right now. The second is the building of many new layers in my life through the guidance of God and the universe. The last is where I want to be in the future after the 21 days. I am working on samples for several spiritual retreat workshops and on Sept. 22 I will share my mandala technique with cancer survivors and I cant wait. I have an amazing artist friend who will be teaching a collaborative workshop. If you are interested in our process just "friend" me on Facebook under Amy Derubis. Well, it IS Saturday but this is my plan. Every Friday I will post some new items in my Etsy shop. It is so hot in the computer room (90 degrees) that I could only muster up the energy to post one item. Sooooo, all this week will be "forgotten Friends Friday" until I get caught up.:)

Teddy Bear Love....

Did you ever have a really good friend that you fell out of touch with? Did it feel like the more time passed, the more difficult it was to take that step to get back in touch? That's exactly the way I feel about this blog. Today is to be the day that I take the step to post. As I write, it feels just like that old friend that you re-connect with, the one who doesn't judge and loves you unconditionally. I think that's why I love stuffed animals so much. For me, they represent that unconditional love of someone who always has a hugs and a shoulder to cry on, no matter the situation. I am hoping to reconnect with the blogging world once again. Now that we are in the heart of winter, I have purged, planned and am settling in to create and make my dreams into reality. I have been quiet online, but it hasn't been quiet around here. I have been taking classes, receiving counseling and making a plan for my life. Of course, all this around a toddler toddling and young adults finding themselves as well. So that said, I will be facilitating my first-ever workshop. I have posted some pictures of the samples. The workshop is just exploring who you are and finding one, resounding affirmation about yourself. I am so excited.:)

We have all been busy here and life is good...not perfect...but good.:)

Since this is my first show, I am trying to figure out what I can make that will actually sell!! Money is kinda a nice thing to have.:) AND I tend to not be the most business savvy. I AM working on that.

The first picture is a shot of my drawing table. The little blocks are creations by super talented friend, Laurie Meseroll. Who happens to be be a super great person as well!! Well, I kind of "stole" these from Laurie and I owe her BIG TIME!!!:)

Well, off to make coffee and get back to work.:) I set up Ethan a table so he works with me on and off during the day.

Well, I am so sorry to announce that I am taking the rest of the summer off to reorganize and revamp my etsy shoppe, my blog and my life.

On a positive note, I have decided to make a plan and revamp my Etsy (more littles than bigs) and take some of my girls and their pets, "On the Road." :)

I am so thankful for all my friends and their wonderful advice! I really love you guys and will be in touch via your blogs. Thanks to my blogging friends who have offered their help in my adventure and to all who just visit. Whether you leave a comment of not, I appreciate the kind thoughts you send me.:)

Stars amd Stripes Forever.....

Well, It has been a while since I posted and am anxious to jot down a few notes here and share some pictures. Summer has been so busy and I barely have had time to even be on the computer. As you can see from the pictures, I am sketching and creating but haven't finished much. Every summer it seems that I find myself experimenting with many different mediums. You may see that reflected in some of my pictures.

I am also getting ready for the J.S.O.'s fourth of July concert. Have I ever mentioned that I am a substitute, symphony flutist by trade? Well, this week will be spent practicing. It is always a fun concert as the symphony plays through as the fireworks go off. They almost lost funding this concert this year but some kind hearts came through at the last minute with funds. A lot of symphonies are losing funding. What a shame. Ours is one of the top 5 in the state and we have a lot of local support but this was scary. I know that it is one of the Maestro's favorite concerts so I am glad it worked out. I love this concert so much I would play for free if need be!!:) So, Happy Early Fourth to all.:)

I actually completed a few of my little dolls. I am kind of saving them until I get a bunch made. Ethan loves to play with them and line them up. It's so cute. I would like to humbly ask my blog friends if they know of any shows I could possibly attend that my art may fit into? Am I even "good enough" to get into a show? I am a "people person" and would love some human interaction and maybe meet some fellow artists out there.

Etsy is not going well for me right now. I am working on something I have never done before. I am working on making little packets of tags to sell and possibly and "outside the lines" colouring book. I am also in the process of listing a bunch of art for 4-sale at $15.00.

Well, life here just got loud and crazy so I guess that's my cue to quit writing!!:) Oh, and the little guy in charge of all the clatter just happens to be the novice, fly fisherman in the pictures!! hugs to all!

Old stuff, Old ideas....New Inspiration

I have been having a rough couple of weeks. I guess the worries of what people think of me are starting to hurt. The questions keep spinning around in my head that I have heard in the past. Why didn't you go to college with a more practical career path in mind? Why do you spend so much time creating art when you make very little money? Why don't I have a REAL job? AND a family member left a nice comment on one of my face book pictures and asked, "Did Ethan(our two year old) get out the crayons?" I guess the decisions I made to some aren't the best and sometimes in some weird way, I bury my feelings into my art. It doesn't talk back. It doesn't care if i'm not perfect and is helps me "heal". I don't know what I would do if I couldn't create. I am wondering if any one out there feels like this at times?

I had been working on a technique using repurposed paper and magazines awhile back. I made the first little doll in the top picture and put her up on Etsy when Ethan was still little. Well, she didn't sell and she got tossed in the reject bin with many others, waiting to be reworked or painted over. As I was visiting my bin, I rescued this little piece and decided that I really like her for more than just visual reasons. I like that I am recycling my materials and using up what I have on hand. I like that this style is more intuitive and as I create, the creation seems to "talk" to me. I like that as I am working I feel "good" about what I am doing. I like that I can be at my kitchen counter working on a piece while I am cooking or while I am watching and playing with my little guy. I like that I feel more "spiritual" and connected to my Creator. For me, the finished product is more that just a "picture". I would call it a form a prayer for me. I feel the same way when I am stitching up one of my paper dolls. As it turns out, in this really dark time, I feel a little "lighter" and a little more hopeful.

From Sketch to Sentiment...

I made a promise to myself that I would send more letters out this year. I really AM trying to catch up with friends but life (sometimes) gets in the way. I started these little sketches this winter and FINALLY ran them up to staples and had some prints made. I attached most of these to repurposed note cards and scrap book paper. Those went onto a piece of 81/2 x 11 inch card stock. I bought a big box of greeting card envelopes and made these cards. I have been making cards since I was little and my skill level hasn't improved much.:) I think I may add some vintage buttons but I wanted to keep them simple so I would be motivated to make more. I have a daughter home with mono right now and a son who hasn't been feeling well with other issues. Both are feeling a little better so hopefully I will be more productive, soon.:)

Well, spring WAS here for a few days and I am so thankful. Right now we are a little chilled and the heat came on this morning. I know that spring "will" be back and that makes days like today much easier.:)

First of all, thanks to all that left such nice comments. It is so nice to know I am not alone and I have discovered new friends.

Well, Ethan just deleted all my writing and so I will post more soon. PROMISE. I will try to upload a few pics between his screaming here.:) Yikes. Ethan made the comment, "mummy you are painting dolls." I guess I am.:) I am also working on other dolls as well. Hope to post more soon and tell of the "goings on" here.:)

Thinking spring!!

Oh, it's been just lovely here the past few days. I thought I would take a minute to update my blog while the little guy was asleep, but he just woke up.:) I finally got out and about a little and came upon these jewelry grab bags and a set of vintage of diaper pins at a new flea market type place here in town. I am so excited to have a local shop again.:) I have had so much fun picking through these baubles and finding treasure.:) I am hoping to dress up some of my dollies with these and who knows what else? I posted a few things in the works. Please excuse the loose pieces and dangling strings. I still have to sift through a bit more. Well, a short but sweet post today due to a busy, busy little toddler. Happy Spring.:)

The "corage" to go on.....

......and start from scratch. As I was working on this piece for the "Haiti by Hand" site on etsy, I realized halfway through that I had spelled "courage" wrong. Well, I felt like crying. Although the design concept really looks simple, I actually put a lot of layers of medium to achieve the effect I wanted. I decided not to cry and try to look at it from a different angle. I am still learning so much and just chalked it up as a learning experience. The other piece was almost complete. It has been sitting here for a long time. I FINALLY figured out what I thought was missing. Just a little piece of "hope".:)

I have been trying my hand at water colour painting over the past weeks. Actually, I mixed up a bunch of paints this summer and have been working "on and off" at them. I am not quite sure what to think of my reasults. I feel a little frustrated as I feel I don't have much control of my color palette.

I moved a bunch more of my supplies out of the family room as this my mess was taking over every surface. Sometimes I start "wishing" for more space, a killer studio like some of ones you see in "where Women Create." But I realize that in truth, I think I would rather be at my "suitcase desk" watching "Wonder Pets" with Ethan. So, for now, I will drag my supplies back and forth from the basement and do the best I can do with what I have. And truthfully, there is a "contentedness" in weaving my creating in with my "real life." :) I posted a picture that of a print I had in my room growing up. Betsey Clark's work has always pulled at my heartstrings since I was a little girl. I remember my mom framing about ten of her oversized post cards to hang on my lavender walls. Betsy didn't have an amazing studio. She worked from a card table in the corner of her living room. She woke up early to work. She is not unlike one of my other inspirations, Tasha Tudor. Both infused their "art" with their daily lives. I realize that looking down at my blog list, many of my sweet friends are part of this group. This Valentine's day I am thankful for the bloggers who share their "hearts" and lives so freely. You will never know all the seeds you have planted that will help others "grow and share" their hearts. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. xxxooo

I t feels good to actually be writing, but I realize that as the new year approaches I need to be more consistent with my writing. It has been about a year since I wrote my first post. I think I have lost site of the "why" I started this blog. Sometimes I get so "bogged down" in thoughts about what am I writing that I lose site of the simple purpose that I set out to complete. I basically wanted an online journal to write down simple thoughts, snippets of the day, things I am working on and of course, to meet some

"kindred spirits", (which I have.):) So, in the next year, I will try to strive to not to worry so much about the fact I can't spell to save my life and that the "grammar police" could probably have a warrant out for my arrest and just try to simply, "write".

In other news, I have been filling my etsy shoppe with some work. My seller name is forgottenfrends. I have tried unsuccessfully to add a link to this page. If anybody could help me in this area, I would GREATLY appreciate that.:)

We have been busily baking cookies. Ethan's hand is now "tie dyed" as a result of discovering the food coloring while Ellory was baby sitting last night. It has been snowing since last night and is a perfect day to settle in and do some more baking. While the girls bake cookies, Tim will experimenting with some artisan breads. We are making a traditional German Christmas this year for my mum. I am so blessed to have a husband who loves to cook and has a real talent for it.:)

It's been so long since I posted that I almost forgot how. Browser problems have been plaguing me for months now. I THINK that it is doing better. I have pretty much been "under the weather since early October when the plague of h1n1 hit us.:) I can't belive that I am STILL running a fever on and off and feel like a will be coughing forever. When I had my foll0w up app't yesterday, the doc told me that a lot of his patients are going through the same thing.

OK enough of that. I have been having so much fun making these little ornaments. My friend Suz of "ahh,surprise, delight..joy", (see the link button on the right), ecouraged me to try my hand at making some ornaments. So here is the result so far.:)

Ethan is at such a fun age right now. We have been enjoying him so much. AND my baby girl had her 16th birthday yesterday. Unbelievable!!

Is anyone else anticipating Christmas as much as I am?? Not the commercial version, but looking forward to decorating, cookie baking and having family and friends around.:) Oh, AND of course only about a week until Thanksgiving.

Well, hopefully I will be blogging more now that the computer is doing better.:) Maybe it caught a bad virus too!!!

Well, at least my little cow has.:) As you may have read in former posts, I do a lot of "creating" in the kitchen. Well, I had the little cow in the picture above, sitting on a little ledge above the stove, when lo and behold, the little guy decided to jump into the pasta pot while it was boiling. I quickly retrieved him with my tongs. The good news is, he actually did me a favor. Now I know that my little dolls are totally water proof!!! He doesn't seem any "worse for the wear", but he told me he prefers drier pastures.:)

Still working on my little dolls and I ran into a small glitch. I realized that i have to create some little stands for them as they tend to be a little "wobbly". Well, I figured out what I will create, but this is yet another setback in my posting. I DID post a few pics of what I am working on. Also, I am starting an album of paintings on my facebook. Hopefully will have more time to paint. With homeschooling , chasing a toddler who is into EVERYTHING and balancing my home life, I treasure every minute I get to create. Also, I feel bad I am not commenting as much as I used to on my "fave blogs". Know that I am visiting when I can.:) AND will try harder. :)

I hate to complain, but am fighting a stomach virus. Am pretty much over the "tummy part", but am let exhausted.:) So, am trying to take it easy today and get a little caught up on posting. I want to head out and capture a little "Fall" on my camera. It's been so nice here.:) Well, gotta run, little guy is teething and keeps biting our dog. Our poor Golden. He is the sweetest dog in the world to put up with such abuse AND he still loves Ethan as if he is his own puppy.:)

Organizing...(or The Battle of the Clutter Bug!!)

We are in the process of working on the house. One of the projects we are finishing up is Ellory's room. It is a little "bitter sweet" as I painted over her "little girl" furniture. It's not that my paintings were that great, but it's more that I am sad and happy at the same time that my little girl is growing up. We are having fun decorating together. We ordered some new furniture pieces, new carpet is ordered, and we are looking for some accessories to help her organize.

I am busy fighting the "clutter bug". I am trying to create in a very small area and trying to keep it neat and tidy at the same time. I finally gave up and moved back to the basement once again. I am busy mixing my paints and experimenting with mediums. ONE OF MY EXPERIMENTS HAS BEEN WITH PAPER. I have been "distressing" it many times over, using various techniques until it is as soft as fabric. On the little "pillow" in the picture, I painted it first and then distressed it. I did this with several samples. Although the paper is soft and pliable, it's hard to see the composition. Some were really bad. Sooo back to the drawing board. This time , I will try to prepare the paper fisrt, THEN paint on it.

I am still targeting for a "beginning" of September re- opening of my etsy shop.

I am so enjoy browsing everyones' blogs and am spending way too much time on Facebook.

We have been having computer problems all summer. Hopefully, this will be the last fix.:) AND i will be able to blog more.

Speaking of bugs, Ethan and I are the only ones who have, (so far), "skated" from a summer cold. Yikes.

Well, our warm weather has arrived with a vengeance. I think we will head to Grandmas and swim....:) I will probably take some projects "to go" as well.

OMG!!! It has been SO LONG since I updated my blog. We have been busy taking some "mini trips" and working on doing just a bunch of "chores" we have been dragging our feet on. We our going through our storage items slowly and trying to "scale down". I guess we have about 70 crates of books alone to go through. The last few days I have been busying myself, (with the help of Ellory..) with the painting of her room. From little girl pink and green to the bright colors she craves. Right now I am in the process of priming her "Peptobismul" pink woodwork. Ughhhhh.... what a job that was. I also did a very poor job of plastering some of the walls as well. I started stripping the paper two years ago when I was a week from delivering Ethan...poor girl lived on that "awful" room for two years. I will take pics when we finish.:)

We attended a Celtic festival and Feis in June. We drove to the hills of Tennessee to visit Ryan's sweet girlfriend Haley and just busied ourselves with activities around town. We also performed with Tim at our friend's farm as a family for the first time. I snagged some cool pottery and plan to return. Sadly, this will be the last year for "Art on the Farm" as Dan and Geeg are both retired and just want to enjoy life and of course, grand kids. They just bought a new camper so I see a lot of traveling in their future around the US.:)

I am still working on my new Folktown dolls and have discovered some really cool , new techniques along the way. I am planning on making many more and my sketchbook is jammed with tons of ideas. I am SO CLOSE to finding my niche...I am still experimenting and perfecting. As you can see from the pictures, I am still working on putting pieces together, but wanted to "Show and Tell a little" as I have no one here to share with.:( Ethan is into everything and going through a terrible bout of separation anxiety. I have a small table I work from in the family room once again. I have abandoned they idea of having my own studio for a few years.

Well, I am home alone with "the boys" as Ellory and Tim head out to Dublin...Ohio that is, for another Celtic festival and dance competition. Ryan plans on showing me an anime movie and we are ordering Chinese. It will be a good night for it as it has been raining here for two days.

Lastly, I am getting my house straightened and doing a lot more cooking.:) Tim and I were able to "steal away" for an overnighter at the Dillweed Bed and Breakfast which is owned by our dear friends Cindy Gilmore(mom) and Corey(son) and Kyra Gilmore. We had a nice trail ride on our bikes..I packed a picnic to share (most recipes from the New Moosewood Cookbook) and Tim provided a nice bottle of wine. We had a really nice evening together. We had run of the B and B and it was fun doing some "midnight shopping" in their wonderful store.:) I have to figure out how to hyper so I could send you there for a virtual visit.

OH, AND I finally joined facebook!:) Would love to have some new kindred "friends" over there....:) Hope to hear from some of you soon to see how your summer is going.:)

PS Am having some MAJOR camera problems and will hopefully have a new one real soon.:)

Roses: OH, I Love a Parade!

I am so behind posting my Memorial Day pictures. We always try to spend Memorial Day in my little hometown of Armagh PA. I actually don't live in the town of Armagh...but around the outskirts of town. I can't believe that such a small town (population is about 40ish) would have a parade. AND growing up we actually had a summer parade as well which was the start of our annual carnival. As you can see from the pictures, this is small town Americana for sure. Ethan loved it! Mitch was the only one who cooperated with a pic...oh I did sneak a pic of Ellory with her cousin:)... can't believe he is graduating in less than a week... so proud of him and all he has accomplished already...:) I had a nice visit with my family, including my cousin Anita who is also one of my best friends...:) All in all it was a beautiful day and it always is on my heart how much I miss living there:)

OH, and there was a parade in Fokltown as well. The mayor's wife was present. There was a parade and a picnic afterward for all the residents. Wish I could have captured some more pics:) but most of it was in my imagination!!! heehee

Please stop over at one of my dearest and oldest friend's new blog... the link is on the right, under "Barnflowers". Lani is actually like my adopted cousin as our families are not blood related, but we have been and raised as family.:) LOVE ya Lani!! She is amazingly talented and her house sits on their families' farm. Her mom is also an heirloom seamstress and Lani has been sewing all her life. Her house is to DIE FOR....I will have to take pictures. Lani does everything... paints, quilts,draws,sews and is an avid gardener. Oh, just LOVE the hex signs she is making. Her craft is authentic and true... she is new to the internet, so PLEASE drop over and say "hi". If she could I know if you visited she would brew you an amazing cup of tea or a home made lemonade. (Now if I could only get my other friend, Ruth to start a blog. hint hint)

Well, I enticed Ethan with a fruit roll up while I typed and well.... my time is up!!:)

PS... notice the wonderful needle case that I was gifted by Viv of Hensteeth. It is by the little Folktown , seamtress elephant.

PPS Would love some feedback on these creations. Etsy is not the best venue for me and I am looking for a show to do that these little guys might fit into. I am also open to doing workshops as well. As sharing with others is my main goal of why I "do what I do" :) Love all you wonderful friends out there.:)xxoo

Roses: In Memory

A Happy Memorial Day to all. I will be attending the little parade that my hometown of Armagh, PA has every year. I can't wait to see Ethan's reaction. It is always good to see neighbors and friends. Then, a simple picnic at my mum's house.

I have a lot of new stuff in the works to post... but for now, here are some pictures of Ethan. This was a big step for Ethan as he is afraid of water. It's always good to have a best friend to help you on your way. In this case, our fearless Golden retriever, Jasper helped him out. :) We have been enjoying long walks, trips to the playground and just having some simple fun. For me, the simple things in life are the most rewarding and pleasurable.

I have been off the web for a while. I am trying to restructure and kind of assess my life and what is important. I have gotten rid of tons of "stuff" and packed up a bit more. I am finding that the process has opened up more time in areas that I was avoiding .:) (aka exercising and spending time with my guitar and writing.) I have a long way to go... but my footsteps are heading in the right direction. (I think). :)

Can't wait to share some pics next week.:) Well, off to finish the potato salad at 11:00 PM !!!

PS I wanted to add a few more bloggers to my list on the right and I accidently deleted everybody instead. Another problem for next week.:)

Well, Harry the gnome announced it's finally Spring in PA. I guess I believe him. He said he's happy for the budding trees and blooming garden but all the rain is "paling" his complexion. (Yes, he is a little vain and kind of "braggy" if he has a little too much Guinness, but that is another story. ):) Nonetheless, I love my little guy.:) I have NOT touched the gardens this year, so there are many weeds already "blooming" along with all the flowers. Truthfully, I sometimes can't tell which are the weeds and which are the ground cover. Oh, to have a "green thumb" like some of my amazing blogging friends such as Viv of "Hensteeth" and Kirsten of "Fleur de Boheme". I DO have a talented husband who has made our gardens and landscaping more beautiful every year. He collected all the stones by hand for our little front garden and I appreciate so much that this was a labour of love for him.:)

OH, it's been so rainy and I have had another few weeks of struggle with this "thyroid thing" that I haven't been out much.:( Ethan brought me the back pack today and cried at the door so I was forced outside and I was glad to breath in the damp air.:) Jasper (my furry shadow) tagged along with us too! I added some pictures of Ethan from a play date from afew weeks ago when the weather was actually HOT! He had so much fun with my friend Scooter's little girl Teegan. She is absolutely adorable and they were so cute together. Thanks Scott, Heather and Teegan for spending the day with us:)

Oh, I just wanted to add a note that the older kids DO NOT want their pictures on the blog. I love all my guys the same... but teenagers... uughh!:) I can't say to much or post too much or they get mad. LOL

On the artsy line, I have been working at a "snails pace" adding to my folktown. I don't really want to unveil any more pieces until I have completed a few more. I HAVE been painting a little and once again, organized my craft nook. For some reason I am having problems getting clear shots of my artwork and I am sooo frustrated !

Ryan and I made dinner together tonight from a recipe he found on his ipod. It was broccoli, chicken and cheese soup. It was yummy and went well with the olive oil bread. Now, I am stuffed and ready to semi- relax. (Translation, cleaning kitchen and chasing Ethan. LOL) :) Life is definitely good! :)

Roses, Radishes and a Rendezvous

I have to send out a big thanks to my family for giving me the opportunity to meet up with Tim for a "date" on Saturday night in D.C. Everyone chipped in babysitting Ethan so I could leave Saturday morning and return on Sunday evening. It started out a little "shaky" as Tim had a difficult time getting to D.C. I checked into our hotel and headed to my favorite Japanese restaurant for a sushi lunch while I awaited his arrival. It was such a beautiful day and I so enjoyed the sunshine. Once Tim arrived, we made it "out and about" a bit before heading back to dress for dinner. We headed to the District and I had a wonderful dinner right by the national archives. We enjoyed the outdoors while dining and I also enjoyed my very first "grown-up" drink, a blood orange Martini. We enjoyed a tremendously, relaxing dinner. After, we traversed around the whole District in search of the "perfect dessert". Tim had a certain place in mind, but once we finally made it there, they were closed. Boo Hoo!:( That was around 10:30.) after searching in the District,then a metro ride back to Roslyn we ended cabbing up to Clarindon ...and ended up at the Cheesecake factory. :) The next morning we brunched at the Ft. Myer Officers' club for brunch then back home!!!:)

This was the first time I had left Ethan, but I knew he was in good hands. Ethan was an angel and everyone had a great time.

AND thanks to my sweetie for arranging this wonderful rendezvous. I had a magical time.:)

Well, I am FINALLY finding a creative niche. I LOVE the way my first "friend" turned out, so I made another. I also made a "vignette" that I hand stitched to a cloth covered back round. Now, I have a whole "folk town" in the works. I think I finally found a way to incorporate all my mediums and processes I have been working on for the past few years. It feels so good that everything seems to be coming together as far as "finding my way" . I think my blog has really helped in so many aspects. I have found a support of friends who I LOVE sharing with, a way to "think out loud" about what I am working on, and a way to kind of record and see my progress. It has also helped that there are so many out in "bloggerland" sharing their lives and creative processes.

Well, off to find the messes made while blogging!:)

Roses: A Family Healing

It has been so long since I posted. We have had quite a month of illness. We ended up canceling our trip to visit Tim because Our little guy was so ill. (I DID snap a few pics of him Easter morning STILL in winter PJ's .) It was very sad and lonely for all involved. Tim and I both lost our Dad's this year as well, so I think going through the holidays next year will be easier for the whole family. On a brighter note, I think we are "through the worst" of our ailments. Ryan is still sick, but seems to be fighting this without the help of antibiotics. Ellory had her first day back to school today in quite a while AND she made it without her cast. SO, I posted some pictures of her new Irish dance dress. This is her motivation to get that leg back into shape. I just love the colors and my picture taking doesn't do it justice. AND, my plan today is getting my ETSY shop "up and running." I have said this before but I am hoping no crisis arises today.

Oh, we have daffodils blooming in the front yard and although it has been cold, I am HOPEFUL that spring is finally here. :) I will post some "works in progress" if I get a chance.:)

Roses: A Surprise Visit

Wow, it has been awhile since I posted. We had a Surprise visit from Tim( that's him in the middle of the two other men) this weekend! I actually knew that he may make it home for the weekend, which gave me time to finally get the house in order. We had a lot of fun, especially Saturday night. We went to see our friends' Irish band, Aran perform. Ethan was the star performer out on the dance floor. I wish I had pictures. It was too cute.

It was difficult for Tim to leave Ethan, but we will travel to see him over Easter.:) For some reason, I have been particularly lonely the past few months. I usually handle these situations better as I think Tim has been away more than home the past two years. At least he is not in the desert and I really don't know how families survive not seeing each other for so long, PLUS knowing your husband is in danger everyday. I feel very blessed that at least we see each other occasionally. AND he has a cottage right on the beach so I am looking forward to a mini vacation over Easter break.:)

I am so behind on blogging and FINALLY finished up two pieces today. I had fun working on these. I have a few more in the works and I really will be posting on etsy soon.:) I finally, FINALLY have my little creative nook finished and I can't believe how productive I have been with such little precious time to work.:) Of course, I wish I could have more hours in the day like most of us, but for now I am thankful for the little precious times I can create.

Roses: Keeping up Tradition

Happy St. Patrick's day to all! I will be playing flute at the following event tonight. I have really enjoyed working on this. Thanks Rachel!

“From Desolation to Consolation: The Journey of a Soul through the Prayers of the Saints,” a special Celtic Christian Service...

The program will explore the theme of going from Desolation, the state of being without God, to Consolation, the union of the soul with God. The heart wrenching prayers from many ancient saints of the church have been put to beautiful melodies of traditional Celtic aires and jigs from Scotland , Wales and Ireland . This combination has resulted in an effective retelling of the Gifts of Grace that God has given us. Celtic Bards will present to attendees the pathways of Joan of Arc, St. Patrick, St. Teresa de Avila, St. Francis, St. Clara, and St. Augustine . Interspersed with the barding will be the saints’ own prayers of pain and passion in seeking God. These will be accompanied by traditional folk instruments, including pipes, harp, bodhran, guitar, violin, and flute.

The book of Jeremiah ( 6:16 ) states, “…stand at the crossroads and look: ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls…”

Unfortunately, Ellory fractured her foot and won't be dancing at this event as planned. So...I had to post some pics from years past and I don't have any of her in her new dress. I snapped a quick picture of Ellory and Sarah today and of Ellory's decorated foot.

Ellory attendeds an Irish Catholic school so today was a big day. One of her favorite teachers tragically passed away at Christmas from cancer. He was very proud of his Irish heritage. In his honor the school sold t-shirts and will use those and other donated funds to start a scholarship program. All the students were encouraged to wear their "green" today.:) No uniforms. The picture of the girls in the Irish dance costumes are Sarah, Ellory and mentor Jordan who is in Ireland studying abroad this year. We miss her dearly.

Radishes: "Intuitive Tuesday"...( on Friday:)

I had this "great" idea. LOL Take a day of the week... every week to create a piece somewhat outside your comfort zone. Take time to choose some items to use that are picked by intuition only. Then, create something with it.

I found three scraps of fabric on the floor that were picked out of a basket by Ethan. (Well, that he randomly grabbed from the basket and threw on the floor:)) I used these pieces to create this piece, "Lonely Bird" #2. I can't tell you how good it felt to create this little piece. I can't wait to do some more pieces similar to these and the "wheels are turning". I really don't know if the work would appeal to anyone but me, but I absolutely felt something in my spirit that was so satisfying and a feeling of contentment came over me when I was in the last stages of completion. I Just had one of those moments when I felt like all the sketching and experimenting I have been doing for the last few years finally (well almost) came together. I wrote in an earlier post (probably more than one) that I haven't been able to get my "vision" from my head to my hands. I think that I figured out the problem. I wasn't letting my "heart" do it's part. I wasn't "letting go" and was more worried about whether or not it would have appeal to a "buying audience". So I think I will try to make "intuitive Tuesday" a regular event. Any one else want to join?:)

Getting ready to "Etsy"

I am in the process of working on a few pieces for Esty. I am excited about some new techniques using mixed media I have been working on. I started the bigger work I call "lonely bird" this fall and found it while cleaning and decided to "get back to it." The other little garden angel reflects my yearning for Spring. We had wonderful weather this weekend and it smells like spring outside.

Well, I am still scaling down my materials and am FInally finished. After a long two weeks of moving stuff around, I decided to move back into the Family Room. (Ruth, I know you are laughing at me right now if you are reading this.) I scaled WAY DOWN. I think after years of struggling, I am finding out where my vision lies and am so excited to explore some of the ideas I have been "sketching" for the last few years. Hope you like the little pieces. Ethan is hanging on me like a monkey and Ellory is anxious to get back on the computer to work on her latest chapter. So, here's to a really exciting Saturday night in Western PA!:)

Taking it easy

Just a quick note. Apparently, I have been walking around with hypothyroidism for quite awhile. I had a battery of tests done this fall when my blood work showed low thyroid levels. Well, I have been to the docs a few times since then, and for some reason my tests got overlooked. When I went to the docs on Monday (he is a wonderful doc, but very busy) and told him how horrible I felt, he rummaged through my file and found the tests results. Well, he said, no wonder, your uptake scan showed low thyroid function and you need to be on medication. The good news is, in a few weeks, I should feel like a "new person". I have felt "in a fog" for the last few months and doc said that is a symptom. I should start losing weight AND having more energy, hence keeping up with family and able to actually get back to creating consistently. I have heard that meds can take awhile to adjust but I have had this problem "on and off" for years so I am encouraged! I learned a big lesson... follow up with your doc because no matter how good they are , they are only human!!:) Hopefully I will be back to creating in the next few weeks after meds kick in and also I need to make more of an effort to keep my asthma in control..) Thanks to all who left kind thoughts my way via blog and email.:)

Radishes: THe curiosity corner

Haven't been doing much blogging here and have to get caught up on emails once again! I have been "under the weather again" and am struggling to keep up with life. In the middle of not feeling well, I am in the process of scaling down my creative clutter and moving it into the dining room which is gated. Ethan is just at a bad age now...not his fault, but I am so scared of the little guy getting a hold of a pair of scissors and really hurting himself. He already grabbed a pair and cut a piece of his hair before a blink of my eye. Well, I will take some pics when I finish. Here are some pictures of my "curiosity corner". Well, what can I say, I am not happy unless I clutter up a space. Most of the little knick knacks are presents accompanied with some of my pieces I slapped up. Well, I know it's not the greatest, but it puts a smile on my face.:) I am still working on the duct tape snowman tutorial.....I go to the doctors tomorrow and am hoping to feel better soon!:) Well, off to clean the kitchen!!:)

ROSES: An Unexpected Treasure

My friend Rachel was by the other day to drop off some music for me. She mentioned that her friend was trying to get rid of some fabric that was handed down from a friend of hers who is downscaling her collection. Well, yesterday I had the pleasure of sharing company with the gifter of the fabric, my neighbor Connie. As soon as I walked through her front door, I felt as if I was in primitive "Heaven". First of all there wasn't an object in the whole house that looked "out of place". I HAVE to go back and take pics of her house. She had the most wonderful treasures! Old suitcases, hats, a jealous collection of little antique mirrors that were to die for,and wonderful pieces of primitve furniture. Connie is kind of "retiring" herself as she did shows for many years. She makes the most beautiful wares and now has narrowed down her crafting to making amazing wool purses for an upscale shop. Anyway, after making me the most wonderful cup of tea, she brought out a huge box. I took a peek in and got goose bumps. Now I am by no means an expert in the field of vintage fabric, but all I know is I LOVE this material and can't WAIT to do something with it. Connie read a note from the woman who gifted her this fabric. It explained that the fabric was milled in 1925 somewhere in New York. Connie wasn't sure where she got the fabric but knew this woman was (she guessed) somewhere in her late seventies. It was such a thrill rummaging through the boxes. There was a feel of nostalgia that I can't explain as I ran my fingers through the fabric. I hope you can see just how wonderful this fabric is from the pictures. I know there is some chiffon, velvet, maybe silk? Some wonderful sheer cottony type fabric and the COLORS.... wonderful patinas that only come with age. And oh, two pieces seem to have metal tinsely thread running through them. Here I am cleaning out my stash.. but this, I couldn't pass up. I feel I have been gifted with a new treasure AND a new friend...Life is good!:) OH, and I mentioned I was low on pearl buttons. She brought out several huge tins of buttons, hands me a big zip-loc and told me to "help myself". She said it brought her joy knowing she could give these things to some one who would appreciate them. Needless to say, I felt so "gluttonous" stuffing this bag with such wonderful treasures. Yet, it didn't stop me.:)

Oh, and of course, as I was trying to snap pictures, Ethan broke out in another episode of "table dancing"!! I also broke out some "paint with water" books this weekend. He is having so much fun with them. He took his "masterpieces" off the fridge to show Ellory's friend ,Mary this evening.

I PROMISE i will get "back on track" with directions on the duct tape snowgirl and some other goodies. For now, time to get little guy to bed!!:)

Whew!! What a day! Ethan is always insisting on helping me with chores... in his own "style". From helping in the kitchen...to "feeding" the animals and floor cleaning, by way of "eating" the random cereal on the floor to vacuuming pretty much everything in his path...but with a watchful eye, I let him have a little fun...a few minutes turned into many tantrums when I tried to "take over" . After an hour of fighting for the vac back...he finally relinquished and read some of his favorite books and took a nice long nap.

While Ethan napped, I stole a little time to put the finishing touches on a quick snowman I made basically out of a bottle and duct tape. I will blog more about that tomorrow. Now, must get back to chores!!!

Roses: Valentine Wishes

Happy Valentines Day to all my friends.:)

Thanks for the well wishes. I feel much better this morning and hoping it lasts. I can't wait to peruse the last few day of posts on my favorite blogs. Well, I really, really wanted to make some Valentines this year. If I get some made they WILL be late. Ellory and I will be making candy today and Ryan made fudge for his girlfriend which is packed up right now with some other little gifts to send off. AND... some packages are going out to England and FLorida...hint, hint. And few others in the works... not quite packed up. It felt good to pack up some stuff.

Oh, and some flowers arrived yesterday from my traveling hubby. Thanks for the sweetness Tim! It really brightened our day. Ellory received the candy heart bouquet and I got the beautiful topiary arrangement. My pics don't do them justice. AND speaking of Valentines... please check out "Small Stories Studio" (link is right of this post) for some of the most beautiful Valentine inspired gifts I have ever seen. I own a few of her pieces and they are AMAZING.. please treat yourself to one, you won't be sorry!:)

Oh, and Ethan got some balloons which he is crazy about. I also bought him some plastic Easter eggs and put them in a cartoon. They are a big hit. I usually let him "help" in the kitchen. Yesterday, I had the eggs a little too close to the edge of the counter. He preceded to "help" by cracking an egg on the floor then ran off with another! What a mess. Oh, and the other pictures of Ethan are of the little guy sneaking onto the dining room table with his other "favorite" toy, a microphone... he LOVES singing!!

OH, and thanks to Ruth for the homemade Valentine and lovely linen embroidery and directions from 1965. It is "started" with some stitches ... can't wait to do something with that.I will post some pics when I create something with it!:) Oh, and the blue collage picture on this post is almost finished with the help of Ruth. She suggested I add a "thread" nest and make the girl stick out more. I added some backings to a few things and really like the way it turned out. I am not quite finished as I would like to add a little message tucked in the nest. Thanks again Ruth!

Roses: Birthday Boys

I am REALLY behind on posting here. The good news is...Ethan is FINALLY, after 17 LONG months taking a nap. People who know me know that Ryan was a 15 minute "catnapper" until one magical day he started taking a 3 hour nap! For Ryan, thankfully, he started napping at around 14 months, which was a blessing since I was pregnant with Ellory and all alone in upstate NY with no help. Now Ethan at 17 months, has started taking 3+ hour naps in the last few days. I am getting my house back, I am starting to get caught up on my wash AND I was able to work on TWO pieces today... AND had a wonderful visit with my "kindred friend" Ruth!! She is an amazingly talented quilter, designer and always gives me that "shot in the arm" when I am about ready to give up! I am going to have to blog more about Ruth in the future AND her Grandma who was an amazingly creative woman. I am very BLESSED that Ruth and her mum have given me many snippets of her Grandmas vintage trims collection, among many other little wonderful baubles!:) I had a blast today and the time went way too fast. I am sad that we only get to see each other every few months!

AND a very Happy (belated) birthday to my son Ryan who turned 17 on Jan. 25th, To his best friend Keegan who had his "sweet 16" on the same day(right in picture) ... .and to my little guy who turned 17 months old on the same day! AND I know this may seem weird to some, but Tim's grandma passed away on the same day a few years before Ryan was born. She was really into numerology so numbers were a huge symbol to her and a big part of her life. I find it comforting because she really wanted us to have a baby. I feel like somehow she is still "looking down" our family.:)

Well, I have a few pieces in progress. I still have work to do but wanted to post a little peek. Also, I am thinking about making some dolls in the near future as well. who knows?? We'll see if the naps continue......:)

Dolly Dreaming

I haven't had time to do any creating lately. I HAVE been purging a lot of my stuff.... getting ready to send to the thrift pile. I just don't have room both physically and mentally to keep EVERYTHING anymore. So I am going through all my stuff and keeping only what tugs at my heartstrings. I would love to get back into doll making again. It's been a long time.....as I look through some of my pictures from the last five years, I realize that I really miss fabric. I struggle with asthma and had to pretty much pack up A LOT of my favorite books (vintage collection), most of my fabric dolls and fabrics, and totally change the way I decorate. I spent too much time in the basement the last two days and I feel the lungs struggling a little. That being said, I think that if I limit my fabric collection and stay out of the basement, i will be OK, not perfect, but I never feel perfect anyway. Anyway, I have many ideas "brewing", to combine some cloth with what I am doing. Well, back to the thrift pile!:)

I feel so guilty! THIS HOUSE IS TRASHED!! I really, really meant to spend the day cleaning. Ryan has been staying with grandma for a few days. He called and needed reading material. Sooo .....I made a trip to the library... where I also spent a few hours yesterday for a play date with my friend Ellen and her sweet granddaughter, Molli, who is about the same age as Ethan. Well, Ryan called me three times for me to pick up some of the books for him. My mum was swinging by "the mall" for something, so I met him at the door and dropped off a bag of books for him. Since I had Ellory in the car with me and Ethan was sleeping so sweetly, I ran into the store for diapers, a trip to michaels where I found more stuff I don't need, and a store called "The Outhouse" which carries random paper goods (OK I bought 100 french fry bags because I LOVED the feel of them for collaging?) from stores that have closed. They also have a candy supply "storette" where Elle and I picked up our annual Valentine day supplies. It has been just "us girls" and Ethan for the last few days. I have not cleaned, cooked ( except to make a batch of cookies, just what I needed), my hair is barely combed and Ethan is lucky to have a fresh Dipe!!! Well, I will go to mums tonight to celebrate Ryan's birthday. (That's where he wanted it....I will cart down pizzas from his fave joint and chase Ryan around her "Marthaesque" , overly cleaned and organized house. Oh that DOES come with all the trimmings I crave. Finely decorated table, everything matchy, matchy....and we never EVER mix dishes!!! I LOVE that at HER house!! I feel so bad when she comes to visit ME:) I wonder why I need a pepcid all of the sudden???:)

P.S. Does anyone else out there like sketching on manilla folders??.....I just LOVE the color of them... also gifted myself with two .005 micron pens.

ROSES: Bountiful Snow

I have been "quiet" in the past week trying to get the house in order and making a plan to organize my chores so I have more time to create. I still have a ways to go but am getting there, slowly but surely. Included in this organization is finishing up my little nook (almost done) and I am STILL putting away Christmas decorations. I am also creating a journaling/planning my day/meditation kind of spot. I will be making a bigger effort to catch up on correspondence with friends as well. Between baby and homeschooling and trying to keep up with everything, my creative endeavors are squeezed in at any free minute I have. "The nook" has been great....I am able to "steal" a lot more time and even have a few things ready for Etsy! Maybe someday I will be brave enough to share pics of my little space.

We had a great time on Sunday with our little guy. It was just that perfect snow AND perfect temperature to be outside. He LOVED the sled and playing in the snow. Ethan's bestest furry friend Jasper had fun too!:) OH, we have been having furnace problems and I am happy to report we will have consistent heat after today. OF course when it rains it pours. My van had a major breakdown at the same time.

Just a quick post... .you just never know what's out there on the net. I Didn't realize there was footage of me on You Tube. I just wanted to put up the Music Video that our extremely talented friend Anthony produced for Tim's song "Waterman",(one of my favorites that Tim wrote). I found footage of me performing with Tim and I couldn't get them off my blog. (They were pretty boring.) But alas, I was able to remove the video AND my bad hair! Yeah! For more samples of Tim's music go to hhstudios.com OH, and in the same vein of this random post, I just put up some pictures of work that had hearts or kind of a "Valentiney" feel to them. All are long gone except for the trinket box which I never tried to sell. It just kind of hangs out in my craft room. As you can tell I am a big fan of hearts....oh and I noticed a few scarves "blowing around" as well.:)

Radishes: Staying on Track Equals "Caving in"!

Oh, I am soooo tired and should be catching up on emails right now. Well, after moving down all my "creative rubbish" from the family room, I realized that in order to get any "playtime" I would have to "cave" and move up some of my stuff. I am allowing myself one table of "stuff" and one crate of favorite books and mags. So far it is working out and I am a much happier person! Ryan still has plenty of room for his "corner", we still have a corner for "cozying up" with a movie or book and I can still move my piano up and have it close to this computer to record. Oh, and Ethan still has his toy corner. Well, this summer I will try to make it more aesthetic, but for now it is functional. I even got some pieces three quarters completed. They definitely still need "a little something". I bet you can guess which quirky picture is called "Staying on Track...." I have been sketching lots of characters on wheels. I am trying my best "to keep on track" this year and am also in an obsession with toy trains lately, inspired by watching too much Thomas the Tank! The others are inspired by Valentines, winter magic and love letters. It feels good to sit down and write a little despite the "business" around me.

Ethan and I did some random playing and sketching yesterday.....I have so many paper scraps scattered "here and there". Ethan enjoys drawing for about a minute then it's off for some other fun! Well, after the new year, I will get down to the studio and do some painting!

Today was spent moving most of my stuff out of the family room so Ethan has more room to play. I am moving my digital piano up here over the weekend to start layin down some tracks for some compositions in the works and with a bit a magic from my mac and "garage band", my "song sketches" will find their way to a recording.... and maybe my paper sketches will find their way to a canvas!:) BIG DREAMS this year!

I love the holiday season, especially when it is sprinkled with sweet, white glitter! Where is the snow here in western PA? I am still enjoying Christmas Vacation but I only wish for just a little snow! This post of some of my vintage displays, is so "thrown together" this year and I am a little embarrassed. I just don't have the "flair" of so many talented bloggers out there. Now, I am still enjoying them, but I think it is partially because of the sentiments attached. The snowman book my Dad (who passed away in July) found for me at a thrift shop, the vintage snow couple Tim found in the basement of a rental property, the flocked ornaments from my dear friend (and adopted cousin) Lani that belonged to her grandparents, Tim's adopted great grandmother's vintage tabletop tree with bubble lights, the four foot goose feather tree from my mum......Ryan and Ellory's hand painted ornaments, Tim's paper chain he made in Kindergarden and the first snowman Tim ever gifted me when we were dating... and all the Christmas memories I hold dear in my heart.....this is what makes Christmas special to me. ... And baby Ethan in his santa suit......watching him play with the train under our tree.....being thankful for all my heavenly Father provides us with....and the little things I can share with others......Blessed Christmas wishes and Happy Hanukkah to all my family ....my treasured friends...and new family out here in "Bloggerland."

Every time I post, I just don't trust that it can really be this easy!:) Yesterday while I was waiting for my almost 17 year old while he was at his bass lesson, I meandered my way down to one of the only neat shoppes I have found here in Johnstown. Anyway, The Blacksmith's Exchange is predominately a knitting shoppe. (I am a terrible knitter, but have found myself spending my pennies on their beautiful hand spun and dyed yarns. They also have some wonderful vintage wares.... there are some really beautiful ornaments. These are the candy containers I couldn't pass up. What really caught my eye about a few of these was that they still had the "F. W. Woolworth price tag of "10 cents" still attached. (excuse my poor spelling and grammar. Screaming baby in my ear is not helping.) The illustrations on these just tore at my heartstrings as well as the glitter. (you just don't see glitter like this anymore.) They probably aren't worth much, but I will treasure these for years to come. I am still working at trying to get some decorations up. Yikes!! A film crew will be at my house Monday to interview Tim on his new Christmas album. (Laurel Mountain Christmas. I was glad to do some instrumentals on this as well.) Sooo...this has been motivation to TRY and clean.....will try to shoot more shots tommorrow.

The weather here is frightfully warm today. It is around 57 degrees. I LOVE snow this time of year, not dreary,wet, rain. Well, here is a little snow house I made last year. I absolutely LOVE mixed media. I haven't done much at all in the past year and am aching to get back to it. The little snowgirl is hand stitched. I am CRAZY for paper. My friend Kriss has also peaked my interest into rubber stamping and would like to dig those out as well. I am going to try take pics of some decorating I have been doing. While I am busy decorating, Ethan is busy "undecorating". It has been a challenge. The older kidz keep asking, "how many trees do you REALLY need mom?"hmmmm.....good question!!:) Anyway, the little house was fun to make. My fave part is the little antique button card I used on the roof. I am in the long process of going through all my supplies and truely leaving out only what I will need (or think I need) . I have very, VERY limited space upstairs, so I bought some organizers. That which was in "cute" baskets or open bowls must now be stored away from "little hands." Sooo...back to work!!!:)

Learning as I go...

I I wanted to archive a work I did this past October. I was one of three artists from the area asked to create a vessel for a silent auction to benefit the Ethnic Bottleworks in Johnstown, PA. Since the Bottleworks was created in an old bottling company, we were asked to make a "bottle" on our speciallty area. (The bottlesworks is an oranization formed here to preserve our rich, ethnic heritage of our town.) My first thought was to create a piece telling a story from my family who owned another bottling company just down the street from the Bottleworks site. My grandfather was one of thirteen children. (A German immigrant family.) The family horse also delivered the various sodas around town. Her name was Dodie and was VERY protective of the children. (From what I hear these kids where a wild bunch!!) When my greatgrandmother would try to discipline the children (hollering to "settle down" etc.) Dodie would go crazy and try to protect them! Anyway, I just had a mind block about this and may address this story in a future work. Instead I picked crows. There are a kazillion neighborhood. I was babysitting for my friend who has a 10 year old daughter. She is very bright at 10 years old and very into animals. She told me that she communicates with a crow that watches her in her back yard. She recognizes this certain crow and feels as if it is kind of a "pet". I told her of a lady who owned a store around where I grew up. She took in a random crow and trained it to talk. The crow lived at the store for many years. I know that crows are very intelligent and although they can be a pain, I really think they a beautiful. I still wanted to keep the idea of my bottle telling a story, but I wanted the viewer to interpret it in his or her own way. The "story" becomes your own. I liked the idea of the crows taking on human characteristics, kind of watching us from a distance. I see them as gathering our "rubbish" and somehow using it in a thoughful way. I built the piece from a vase I found. If I had more time, I probably would have built the whole from paper. I cheated!!:) I used some vintage pieces from the area. I pounded down some little molds, used buttons, stones, paper, and paints. I was glad for this experience. It has helped me grow some wings myself.:)

Snowy Sunday

This is my first ever post in "blogland". Yikes! I am kind of skeptical that I can really do this...but I guess I will see. I am busily trying to create some time to work on Holiday gifts and things for Etsy. The sketches are taking longer than the actual paintings. I am trying hard to transfer my ideas from my head, to paper...to the canvas. I am STILL struggling with this. I am trying for a more "sketchy" , "pencily" look if that makes sense.

I am getting over strep throat and sinus infection. The only good part about the last week was fever induced ideas brewing in my head!!LOL....well, my ever-faithful assistant needs help with some stinky "paper work" to be done!:)
